Lovespoons at Sea

A traditional Welsh gift, lovespoons were originally made by sailors for their sweethearts to literally whittle the hours away at sea. I made a number of crude lovespoons and sent each spoon to a different coastal location around the UK, so they could spend some months being battered and whittled by the sea. Sadly, only one spoon (the one pictured) was recovered. This one was nestled in a barnacled rock crevice on Ynys Llanddwyn, a tidal island off Anglesey linked to the Welsh patron saint of love, Santes Dwynwen.

This is a shelved project, which I'd love to resurrect, ideally with fewer spoons lost at sea (as romantic as it is to imagine them being found on distant shores). If you live by the sea, and might be willing at some point in the future to secure a lovespoon to a chain in a harbour, or to a boat, or to something that lives in the sea, please do get in touch.
